Liam Mackay was a surprise signing for Harchester United when he joined from Crewe Alexandra in August 2005.
Having once been described by then-manager Felix Hahn as a "Lower League Journeyman", Mackay's progress at Harchester United can only be described as incredible.
Mackay began his career at Scottish side Partick Thistle and went on to win successive promotional titles at the club in 2000/01 (Second Division) and 2001/02 (First Division) leading to SPL football.
Midway through the 2002/03 season, Mackay was sold to Dario Gradi's Crewe Alexandra.
Mackay's loyalty and commitment was clear to see at the club, however Gradi felt that something was lacking in his game and sent Mackay out on loan to Port Vale in the 2004/05 season.
Whilst on loan to Port Vale, Mackay was involved in a situation which led to future-Dragon's boss and then-Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Alex Dempsey's career being ended with a harsh challenge.
This situation came back to haunt Mackay in his first season with Harchester United as a challenge on Chelsea striker Asa Maloin in the Carling Cup Final led to the Swiss's career coming to an abrupt end. Mackay was almost banned from football for life following this incident.
After signing for the Dragons from Crewe in 2005, Mackay only made one appearance under then-boss Felix Hahn. The German later revealed that he didn't want to sign Mackay and that the transfer was forced through by the chairman.
Mackay eventually broke into the side and his commitment and passion to succeed shone through.
After being made captain for the 2006 FA Cup Final victory over Arsenal, Mackay stated that he had a dream that Harchester United could go through a whole season unbeaten - and that they did!
In 2006/07, Jimmy Craig became the new manager of Harchester United and made Mackay his captain - a complete turnaround of fortunes from just 2 years before! Not only was he made captain, but he also led the Dragons on to an undefeated league campaign that also won the Premier League.
Harchester United had become League Champions for only the second time in the club's history!
Mackay has remained as captain at the club and led the Dragons to the Champions League semi finals in 2007/08 and also to winning the Carling Cup for the first time in the 2010/11 season.
Liam Mackay is rarely trouble by injuries, fully committed to the club and is passionate about the club succeeding for years to come - the perfect reason as to why he is the perfect Captain for the club.
