Name: Thomas Heikkinen
Country: Finland
Position: Goalkeeper
Signed from: Bayern Munich (Germany) in July 2010
Debut:
Newcastle United (Away), FA Premier League, 15th August 2010 |
Thomas Heikkinen signed for Harchester United in the summer of 2010 for a price of £13million from Bayern Munich.
Throughout the 2009/10 season, it was clear that Harchester United needed stabilty in the goalkeeping department. Fernando Fuentes lacked big match experience and Alex O'Mare was constantly picking up slight injuries.
Manager Erik Gentner made it clear that he wanted to sign a top keeper at the end of the season, and new chairman Vikram Parmar gave him the funds to sign one. So it was the Champions League finalist Heikkinen that was signed.
Heikkinen began his career with Finland playing for FK Teplice. He made his international debut against France in a World Cup qualifier and made headlines as he kept the French at bay in a shock victory at the Stade De France.
This captured the eye of some bigger clubs and in January 2006 he signed for PSV Eindhoven. He went on to win the Eredivisie title that season and for the two seasons to follow.
In the summer of 2008, Bayern Munich signed Heikkinen for £9million. A huge price, but worth it for the German side as his goalkeeping heroics not only led them to the Champions League final in 2010, but also helped capture the Bundesliga title and German Cup that season too.
Following the heartbreak of the Champions League final defeat to Inter Milan in 2010, Heikkinen told German TV station RTL that he wanted to stay at the club and go one better a year later. However, just 2 months later, he was a Harchester United player.
Success continued for Heikkinen at the Dragon's Lair as the club went on to win the Carling Cup for the first time in the club's history in his first season at the club!
